DPR Speaker urges P20 to address climate change

Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, on Wednesday urged P20 parliaments to tackle climate change since its impact has increasingly been felt by people across the globe.

Natural disasters, such as droughts and floods, have continued to occur with increasing frequency. The global temperature has increased by 1.1 degrees Celsius (compared to pre-industrial levels), she noted during the “Parliamentary Forum in the Context of the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit.”

P20 is a forum for parliamentary speakers and people’s representatives from G20 countries, which aims to bring a parliamentary dimension to global governance and increase political support for international commitments.

G20 is an international forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union that cooperate to handle major issues. Indonesia is holding the presidency of the grouping this year, with the G20 Summit scheduled to be held in November.

All parties must have a sense of urgency as now is the time to act to reduce global emissions, expedite the transition to renewable energy, and implement financial aid and technology transfer for developing countries.

According to Maharani, the world needs to develop climate change mitigation centered on humans and that will have to start with developing awareness and commitment to preserving nature and the environment.

The next stage would involve collective will in developing an environment-friendly industry and economic ecosystem, she said.

A change in mindset is necessary so that we do not just take from nature, but also restore nature, she added.

Moreover, realistic and real cooperation between nations and countries is necessary to address the core problem—managing global economic and industry rivalry that can contribute to environmental recovery.

Parliaments are also becoming more aware of the strategic role of bolstering international cooperation between them to adapt to and mitigate climate change, she noted.

The DPR has also taken real actions to support climate change mitigation and adaptation by strengthening sustainable development and the green economy.

These real actions have included proposing the New and Renewable Energy Bill and utilizing solar cells to meet 25 percent of the electricity needs in the DPR building, she informed.
