“The electricity sector remains the biggest user of coal in the country,” Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif stated at a working meeting with the House of Representatives’ (DPR’s) Commission VII in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The electricity sector’s coal consumption reached 70.08 million tons in 2015, some 75.4 million tons in 2016, some 83 million tons in 2017, some 91.14 million tons in 2018, around 98.55 million tons in 2019, some 104.83 million tons in 2020, and around 112.13 million tons in 2021.

“Based on the realization between 2015 and 2021, coal consumption for the electricity sector swelled 60 percent, while coal consumption for non-electricity industries rose 52 percent,” he noted.

He further highlighted a plan for coal consumption from 2022 to 2025, with the electricity sector remaining the biggest coal consumer.

Domestic coal requirements are projected to reach 188.9 million tons in 2022, increase to 195.9 million tons in 2023, and further move up to 209.9 million tons in 2024 before declining to197.9 million tons in 2025.

Meanwhile, coal demand from the electricity sector is expected to increase to 119 million tons in 2022, some 126 million tons in 2023, and around 140 million tons in 2024 before falling to 128 million tons in 2025.

The planned coal volume based on new contracts in the electricity sector for 2022 reaches 144.14 million tons, with the allocation volume of 122.52 million tons. By July 2022, the realized coal consumption in the electricity sector reached 72.94 million tons, he stated.
