Brussels: Today in Brussels, President von der Leyen and President Prabowo Subianto of the Republic of Indonesia reached a political agreement on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). This significant development marks a decisive milestone towards its conclusion by Commissioner Maroš Šefcovic and Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto by September 2025.
According to European Union, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, emphasized that Europe and Indonesia are opting for a path of openness, partnership, and shared prosperity. The agreement is set to open new markets and create more opportunities for businesses, while also bolstering supply chains of critical raw materials crucial for Europe’s clean tech and steel industry. President von der Leyen expressed her anticipation for the agreement’s swift conclusion.
Beyond trade, both President von der Leyen and President Prabowo underscored their mutual vision for a broader bilateral partnership. To enhance people-to-people contacts between the EU and Indonesia, the Commission has adopted a visa cascade decision for Indonesia, facilitating quicker and easier access to multiple-entry visas.
The leaders also reiterated their commitment to advancing a clean energy transition that is inclusive. Indonesia highlighted its national approach focused on energy self-sufficiency and resilience, as outlined in the Asta Cita. In this regard, the Just Energy Transition Partnership and the EU’s Global Gateway are welcomed to support Indonesia’s long-term goals and national priorities.
Furthermore, both leaders affirmed their support for a rules-based international order, closer UN cooperation, and peace efforts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Europe and Indonesia are committed to strengthening ASEAN and EU partnerships, actively supporting peace, prosperity, and sustainable development in the Indo-Pacific region.
Finally, they agreed that the strengthening ties between Indonesia and the EU, grounded in shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, should lay the foundation for a stronger, more strategic partnership in the future.
