Fake Fashion Braces Pose Serious Health Risks, Warns Department of Medical Services

Bangkok: The Department of Medical Services has issued a warning about the dangers associated with fake fashion braces, highlighting the risks of infection, inflammation, and even death due to substandard materials and procedures. The department urges individuals to seek orthodontic treatments exclusively from licensed dental specialists to ensure safety and efficacy.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Pairoj Surattanawanich, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, expressed concern over the illegal acquisition of fashion braces, a trend facilitated by social media platforms. He emphasized the dangers of obtaining braces through unauthorized channels, such as hotel rooms, where unsupervised procedures pose significant health risks. Dr. Surattanawanich stressed the importance of professional dental supervision in orthodontic treatments, which correct various dental issues and require a stringent sterilization process.

Dr. Sumana Phothisrithong, Director of the Dental Institute, further
explained that improper application of braces by unqualified individuals could lead to detrimental effects on oral health. Incorrectly positioned braces can cause teeth misalignment, bad bites, and hinder oral hygiene, leading to tooth decay and gum disease. Additionally, the use of substandard materials, potentially containing harmful substances, poses severe health hazards, including the risk of infection and accidental ingestion.

Both experts underscored the necessity of seeking orthodontic treatment from certified professionals and warned of the potential life-threatening consequences of using fashion braces from unauthorized providers. They urged those who have already received such treatments to consult a dentist immediately for corrective measures.
