Final death toll in Kanjuruhan Stadium disaster reaches 131: Police

Indonesian Police’s Public Relations Division Head Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo confirmed that the final count of casualties in the Kanjuruhan Stadium tragedy reached 131.

“The final number of casualties is 131 people,” Prasetyo told ANTARA here, Wednesday.

He said that the data on total casualties was obtained by joint verification among the regional health office, the disaster victim identification (DVI) team, and directors of hospitals.

The earlier discrepancy in the casualty data occurred due to the health office and the DVI team only accounting for the casualties at hospitals, the division head remarked while adding that upon verification, some 12 victims were known to have died outside health facilities.

“The discrepancy in the tally was due to (victims having died) outside healthcare facilities, which we discovered after verifying the data with the regional health office, the DVI team, and hospitals’ directors,” Prasetyo noted.

He said 44 victims had died in government-run hospitals: Kanjuruhan Regional General Hospital that admitted 21 victims; Dr Saiful Anwar General Hospital, with 20 victims; and Bhayangkara Hasta Brata Batu Hospital that admitted two victims.

Moreover, 75 victims had died at seven private hospitals: Wafa Husada Hospital that admitted 53 victims, Teja Husada Hospital, 13 victims; Gondanglegi Hospital that admitted four; Hasta Husada Hospital, three victims; and Ben Mari Hospital, Soepraoen Hospital, and Salsabila Hospital each with one victim.

As of today, the police summoned 29 witnesses, including 23 police officers, in their investigation of the stadium tragedy. The Police’s Forensics Laboratory is examining CCTV recordings obtained from gates 3, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 of the stadium and blood drops at gates 11 to 13.

To investigate the tragedy, the government, on Monday (October 3), also established an independent joint fact-finding team chaired by Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD.
