Flooding forces 815 West Jakarta residents to leave home: BPBD

At least 815 West Jakarta residents were evacuated after their houses were inundated by floodwaters reaching a height of up to one meter, the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has said.

“Sixty-four neighborhood units are still flooded,” Head of data and information center of Jakarta BPBD M Insyaf informed here on Wednesday.

Until 9 a.m. local time on Wednesday, 64 neighborhood units in West Jakarta were reported to be water-logged, he said. Thus, 0.21 percent of Jakarta’s total 30,470 units were flooded, he added.

Among the 815 evacuees, 234 household heads were impacted by the flood in Tegal Alur village, according to BPBD.

The evacuees fled to 11 locations such as Tegal Alur Rented Flats, Al-Hidayah Mushala, a food stall, Alur Anggrek child-friendly integrated public space (RPTRA), and Darurohman Mosque, it said.

Some evacuees also took shelter at Majlis Taklim Al-Hikmah, Kemuning RPTRA, Majlis Taklim Durrotul Abiddin, Al-Ikhlas Mushala, Nurul Hidayat Mosque, and Majlis Nurul Husna.

The water level reached 40–100 cm in 31 neighborhoods, Insyaf informed. “The causes of the flood were heavy rainfall, coastal flooding, and the overflow of Semongol River,” he said.

In Kamal village, the water level reached 40–50 cm, affecting 12 neighborhood units, he added.

Meanwhile, in West Cengkareng village, the water level reached 50 cm due to heavy rainfall and affected 13 neighborhood units, he said.

In the two villages, 22 family heads, or 72 people, were forced to evacuate to Al-Hidayah Mushala in the 7th neighborhood (RT) 10th Hamlet (RW), he added.

In Kapuk village of the Cengkareng sub-district, water-logging was reported in eight neighborhood units due to high rainfall, he said.

“The flooding is being handled by the Water Resources Office, fire-fighters, and Village Public Facilities and Infrastructure Handling Workers (PPSU). The water is targeted to recede soon,” Insyaf added.
