Flooding in Chiang Rai economic zone, estimated damages 400 million

The economic zone of Chiang Rai Municipality is flooded as the Kok River level continues to rise and water erupts and pushes down drainage pipes, causing widespread flooding. Damage is estimated at 400 million baht.

Chiang Rai city area is still flooded due to the Kok River flowing through Chiang Rai city still overflowing the banks and flooding. In addition, in some low-lying areas in Chiang Rai Municipality, there is a problem of water gushing out of the drains, causing flooding in almost every area in the economic zone. Meanwhile, some communities in Wiang Subdistrict, Rob Wiang Subdistrict, Rim Kok Subdistrict and San Sai Subdistrict, which are in low-lying areas, still have flooding higher than 1 meter.

Chiang Rai Municipality and related agencies have installed large water pumps around several economic areas of the city to drain water out of the area. However, due to the high water level of the Kok River, the drainage of floodwater in the city area into the Kok River has been ineffective. In the mea
ntime, both the government and private sectors have opened sandbag stations to distribute to the public to temporarily block the water, as the sand provided by the municipality is insufficient.

As for the progress of the traffic routes, Chiang Rai Highway District 1 still closes all 7 bridges over the Kok River to all types of vehicles. People who want to go to Mae Sai District must use the route through Wiang Chai District to Wiang Chiang Rung District, which is a detour distance of about 30 kilometers. Meanwhile, educational institutions in Chiang Rai Municipality, especially 8 Chiang Rai Municipality Schools, Samakkhi School, Damrongratsongkhro School, and Chiang Rai Witthayakhom School, are closed until this Friday for the safety of students.

For the Kok River flowing through Chiang Rai City, it will flow through Doi Luang District before flowing into the Mekong River at Wat Phra That Pha Ngao, Ban Sop Kok, Tambon Wiang, Amphoe Chiang Saen. In this regard, Siam Commercial Bank has assessed the damage fr
om this flood in Chiang Rai Province, expecting the economy to be damaged by approximately 400 million baht.
