Bangkok: The government has pledged its support for the OTOP project to foster sustainable value and income. Bhumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, acting Prime Minister, inaugurated the “Thai Arts and Crafts, OTOP, Forging Hearts with Royal Grace” event, emphasizing the government’s dedication to expanding the OTOP initiative. The focus is on broadening market channels, enhancing quality, and modernizing designs to ensure sustainability.
According to Thai News Agency, the event took place at Challenger Hall 2, IMPACT Muang Thong Thani, and was organized to honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. Her Majesty has devoted herself to preserving Thai handicrafts, making them a point of pride for the nation. The Support Foundation for the Promotion of Arts and Crafts, under her patronage, was created to inspire Thai people across regions to engage in arts and crafts as a supplementary occupation, thus improving income and life quality in rural areas.
The government has prioritized the expansion of the OTOP program, aiming to enhance local capabilities and create more marketing channels. Buyers value certain traditional handicrafts, and OTOP projects play a key role in preserving this art. Concurrently, other product categories are being modernized to appeal to contemporary tastes, ensuring they meet the needs of newer generations.
Furthermore, OTOP events serve as marketplaces, bringing together products from all over Thailand for international buyers, thus generating income and instilling pride in producers. These events are also platforms to showcase the development of Thai OTOP products to a global audience. The government is committed to supporting Thailand’s creative soft power, ensuring that Thai skills and creativity generate sustainable income.
The “Thai Arts and Crafts, OTOP: Forging Hearts with Royal Grace” event, running from August 9-17, 2025, invites both Thais and international tourists to support local producers. This initiative is crucial for distributing revenue to local communities, thereby strengthening Thailand’s grassroots economy. Mr. Phumtham also visited an exhibition honoring His Majesty the King, which included various OTOP products on display and for sale.
