Government Promotes Five Thai Herbs as Herb of the Year for Economic Growth

Bangkok: The government is actively promoting five key herbs as the Herb of the Year, generating significant income and boosting the Thai economy. Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, Deputy Government Spokesperson, emphasized the value of Thai herbs and wisdom in creating economic benefits, with these herbs contributing over 3.5 billion baht to the economy. The government aims to enhance the role of traditional and alternative medicine, making them safe, accessible, and quality health services, while also positioning Thai herbs as a soft power to drive long-term economic growth.

According to Thai News Agency, last year’s successful elevation of turmeric, fingerroot, black galangal, kratom, and cannabis as the Herb of the Year resulted in a remarkable increase in their value, adding over 3,526 million baht this year. The Ministry of Public Health organized the ’22nd National Herbs Fair’, which attracted more than 300,000 participants, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. The event saw cash trading nearing 50 million baht and established 219 herbal business partnerships, resulting in an estimated turnover of around 198 million baht, showcasing the development and growth of Thai herbs.

Mr. Anukul highlighted the government’s commitment to advancing Thai traditional medicine, alternative medicine, and herbs. The government supports business initiatives and farmers growing these herbs. It also focuses on promoting Thai traditional medicine, leveraging local wisdom as a strength and soft power to enhance health tourism, build confidence, and develop a health service system that appeals to both Thai and international tourists. This initiative aims to generate sustainable income for the people and the country, ensuring long-term economic benefits.
