Governor calls for moderation in holiday festivities

For example, it’s enough to celebrate at home by gathering with family

Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands  Governor of Riau Islands province Ansar Ahmad  has appealed to the public to celebrate Christmas and New Year in moderation amid the current uncertain economic conditions.

“For example, it’s enough to celebrate at home by gathering with family,” he said in Tanjungpinang on Saturday.

He also reminded people to not burst firecrackers during the holidays since their use has been banned by a Home Affairs Ministry circular.

He said that bursting firecrackers could put someone or people’s surroundings at risk of fire, for instance.

“The money to buy firecrackers can be used for other useful things,” he added.

This year, there are no restrictions on Christmas and New Year celebrations, which marks a departure from the past two years when people’s activities were limited by strict health protocols due to the high number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

Therefore, Ahmad urged the public to be grateful because COVID-19 cases in the Riau Islands have continued to decline, which has led to the government declaring the relaxations, especially during Christmas and New Year.

“But stay alert and take care of your health to avoid disease,” he said

He also assured that the regional government and all relevant stakeholders will ensure the safety and security of people celebrating the year-end holidays.

Security forces have been kept on standby at churches and crowded centers that might face a risk of disruptions during Christmas and New Year.

“So that the community, Christians feel safe and calm while worshiping in the church. The same goes for residents celebrating New Year’s Eve,” Ahmad said.

The governor further said that the supply and prices of basic necessities have remained stable ahead of Christmas and the New Year. His administration will hold a bazaar to control inflation and maintain people’s purchasing power.
