House of Representatives’ (DPR’s) speaker Puan Maharani urged the government to focus on saving and providing assistance for victims of floods and landslides that struck several regions in the country.
“I express my deep condolences to the victims who died and were injured due to floods and landslides that occurred in several regions in Indonesia,” Maharani noted in a statement here on Tuesday.
Maharani conveyed the statement in connection with data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), which reported 76 natural disasters, from floods to landslides, in the past week. Floods and landslides have claimed 13 lives.
The flood-affected regions include Bogor and Bandung in West Java and several regions in East Java, such as the districts of Malang, Blitar, and Banyuwangi. Floods also hit regions outside Java, such as Jembrana and Karangasem in Bali. Moreover, landslides struck in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.
The speaker assessed that the government, along with relevant stakeholders and the search and rescue (SAR) teams, should channel all attention on rescuing victims and ensuring that the missing victims can be found.
She also reminded the central and regional governments to immediately provide assistance to the affected victims, including people, who lost their houses and livestock.
“Give the best services for the people, including paying attention to the needs of children, older adults, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. The evacuation areas must be comfortable and equipped with medical services for the people,” she emphasized.
The house speaker also called on the government and other stakeholders to stay alert and mitigate the impact of disasters caused by extreme weather. In addition, she called on the community to remain vigilant and monitor weather information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
“I also urge DPR members, who are currently entering the recess period, to help residents, especially those whose electoral districts are hit by floods and landslides,” she remarked.
Maharani noted that DPR members should focus on the needs of disaster-affected residents and create emergency posts to help the community.
