Gov’t urged to investigate pollution in Cileungsi River

The Cileungsi Cikeas River Care Community (KP2C) has urged the government to conduct an investigation into the waste that has long polluted Cileungsi River.

“There is a pungent smell and fishy odor. The fishy odor allegedly comes from meat waste from industries related to livestock. An investigation needs to be done. The pungent smell usually comes from chemical waste,” Head of the KP2C Puarman said in Gunungputri, Bogor, West Java, on Thursday.

According to him, this is not the first time that pungent smell and foam have emanated from Cileungsi River. The volume of foam has now increased or become larger, he added.

“In Parigi Curug (waterfall), there is always foam every day. The flow before the waterfall is Bogor district or Bekasi city, (but) we have not figured out where the foam is from,” he said.

Puarman said he suspected that the foam is emerging because the river is being contaminated with chemical waste.

“We have not found out yet what type of foam this is, maybe from laundry or domestic waste. This needs proof, and it is not easy to do it. There needs to be an effort by the government,” he added.

On Tuesday (July 26, 2022), foam and pungent smell were reported from Cileungsi River in Bojong Kulur Village, Gunungputri, Bogor District, West Java, for a few minutes.

Meanwhile, Bogor District Environment Office head Ade Yana Mulyana said the office will monitor people throwing waste into the river with the help of CCTVs.

“The function (of the CCTVs) is when pollution happens, we can at least identify the points. This is what we have difficulty doing,” he added.

He said his office is calculating the requirement for CCTVs with KP2C, and checking the budget prepared for procurement.
