Narathiwat: The sports day event organized by the Ko Saton Subdistrict Administrative Organization in Tak Bai District turned into chaos when gunmen opened fire, injuring four individuals, including village defense volunteers and a teacher. In a separate incident, a gunman targeted a police checkpoint at Chanae Police Station, resulting in the death of one officer and injuring another.
According to Thai News Agency, during the sports event against drugs in Narathiwat Province, an assailant dressed in black entered the Sepak Takraw sports field and fired multiple shots, causing participants to flee. Security footage captured the incident, which left four individuals injured: Mr. Sukree, a teacher at Ko Saton School, along with volunteer defense corps members Hamdanuddin, Muslim, and Mr. Zainuddin. All were promptly taken to Tak Bai Hospital for treatment.
Investigations revealed that six perpetrators used three motorcycles to blend in with the public before launching their attack at the anti-drug sports competition. Following the incident, the Tak Bai District Chief visited the injured to offer assistance and compensation.
In a separate attack, a group of armed assailants targeted the Chanae Police Station. The incident unfolded at around 08.40 in the morning when the attackers, hiding in an alley opposite the station, opened fire on the checkpoint. Pol. Sgt. Thirasak, leading the checkpoint team, and his officers responded to the attack.
Pol.Sgt.Maj. Abdulleh, positioned on the third floor of the police station, attempted to support his colleagues by firing at the assailants. However, he was fatally shot in the head. The attackers also injured Pol. Sgt. Maj. Jessada, who was on duty at the checkpoint. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Narathiwat Rajanagarindra Hospital.
The attackers used a nearby shop as a sniper location, leaving behind more than 30 bullet casings, which authorities collected as evidence. The aftermath of the attack saw damaged glass windows at the station and bloodstains in the meeting room.
As Pol.Sgt.Maj. Abdulleh’s body was prepared for religious ceremonies, the community mourned his loss. He was laid to rest with full honors at the Ba Le Baro cemetery in Ra-ngae District, Narathiwat Province.
