Jakarta (ANTARA) – It is hoped that the commitment of the parliamentary forum of Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia (MIKTA) would help improve global conditions, House of Representatives (DPR RI) Speaker Puan Maharani has said.
“The tension among major countries has escalated lately. It is not enough to make a list of problems and analyze them. While we are at the beginning of 2022, it is the right time to affirm the commitment to improve the global situation,” Maharani remarked here on Monday.
She made the statement while speaking at the 2022 MIKTA forum, themed “Effective Parliaments Supporting Democracy,” hosted by Australia and chaired by Australian Senate President Slade Brockman.
Though 2022 has just begun, the world is facing various uncertainties, such as the new COVID-19 variant, which has brought new challenges, she said.
The pandemic has exacerbated poverty, inequality, and many social problems, she noted.
Furthermore, other world issues, such as global warming and continual environmental and biodiversity damage, have also continued, she pointed out.
Therefore, she said she hoped that the parliaments of MIKTA member countries will become a part of the solution. As a middle power group, MIKTA members have a unique position, Maharani added.
“To take a constructive role to promote peace, stability, and resolutions of many global problems. Then to bridge the position differences among countries, between developed and developing countries, and reduce tensions between major countries,” she explained.
Some efforts that need to be carried out collaboratively in early 2022 include stopping COVID-19 transmission by distributing vaccines evenly, addressing the unequal global economic recovery and international trade, as well as the climate change crisis, she added.
