Indonesia, Canada exchange notes on G20 Presidency, Ukraine conflict

Indonesia and Canada on Monday exchanged their views on the G20 Presidency and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and discussed and agreed to boost bilateral economic cooperation.

Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi, during the visit of Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly to Jakarta on Monday, underlined the importance of the G20.

“I underline how important the G20 is for the people of the world. Our people are waiting for the concrete deliverables of the work of the G20. Wisdom is needed, especially in this challenging time,” Marsudi stressed.

Member countries should not lose sight of the long-term responsibility of the G20 as a premier economic forum and as a catalyst for economic recovery, she said.

Indonesia will continue to open communication and consultation with all members of the G20, she said, adding that the country truly appreciates the support of Canada for the presidency of Indonesia.

Both countries also share the same concern regarding the situation in Ukraine, Marsudi noted.

“We share the same views on the importance of upholding the principle of respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty,” she said.

The principles should be upheld consistently by all countries, and Indonesia is calling for an end to the war now, she underlined.

Tensions should be reduced and negotiations should be intensified, she added.

“Each and every one of us should use our influence to stop the war. War only brings suffering for humankind and for all of us,” she remarked.

Minister Joly lauded Marsudi’s leadership in responding to conflicts in the region, such as in the South China Sea and Myanmar, and also conflicts on a multilateral scale, such as the Russia-Ukraina conflict.

“I am grateful for the leadership of Minister Marsudi in efforts to stop the conflict in Ukraine that have negative impacts. We agree to uphold the integrity and sovereignty,” Joly said.

Joly also affirmed Canada’s support for the success of Indonesia’s G20 Presidency.
