Indonesia focuses on honing skills of tourism professionals: Uno

Indonesia will lay stress on improving the quality of tourism professionals in the ASEAN region by adopting technology to develop tourism and the creative economy in 2022, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno stated.

“In future, tourism professionals are expected to not only expand their skills and talents in the ASEAN region but also in other countries, such as Japan, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand,” he noted.

At a virtual event on Wednesday, he opined that improving the capability of tourism professionals could become a type of investment to develop the tourism and creative economy sector.

This is because this investment could significantly contribute to economic recovery in certain regions, he affirmed.

In future, success of the tourism sector in the ASEAN region could perhaps not solely be measured through the number of visits by international tourists but also by observing the increase in the number of skilled tourism professionals in the Southeast region.

To this end, the minister encouraged all parties in the ASEAN region to extend support in empowering the best talents to facilitate recovery of the tourism and creative economy sector and open business opportunities.

“Our support will be expanded in more partial programs and activities that could be discussed at a special discussion or through a working group discussion,” Uno stated.

Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy’s Secretary, Ni Wayan Giri Adnyani, noted that her group had conducted several activities in an effort to improve the skills of tourism professionals.

Such activities comprise skill development in Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing, Exhibitions (MICE) and holding activities in the ASEAN region in accordance with the competency standard.

“In addition, collaborating with the private-public partnership pattern to assist in bolstering tourism professionals’ skills and technology utilization,” she added.
