Indonesia recorded 4,834 additional COVID-19 infections on Friday, which took the total number of positive cases to 6,159,328 as of Friday, the COVID-19 Task Force reported.
Jakarta contributed as many as 2,465 cases, followed by West Java (933 cases), Banten (550), East Java (286), and Bali (158), data received from the task force showed.
The number of active cases also increased by 1,458 to reach 38,239.
At least 13 persons succumbed to the disease on Friday, pushing up the death toll to 156,893.
Although cases with COVID-19 indication registered an increase, the recovery rate also went up significantly, with 3,363 recoveries recorded on Friday, which took the total tally to 5,964,196.
Jakarta contributed the most recoveries at 1,769, followed by Banten (509), West Java (433), East Java (322), and Bali (115).
At least 112,790 specimens were reviewed in laboratories across the country, with 5,861 suspected COVID-19 cases recorded on Friday, the task force informed.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that the COVID-19 transmission rate in Jakarta had reached Level 3, while Indonesia, as a whole, was still at Level 1.
Community transmission refers to the level of COVID-19 transmission occurring in a certain region and its spread among the general public.
“In general, Indonesia’s transmission rate, (seen from) the WHO’s (World Health Organization’s) standard, is still on Level 1. However, some provinces, such as Jakarta, are already on Level 3,” Minister Sadikin noted on July 18, 2022.
The most deaths were recorded among people who were still to get vaccinated or those who had received just the first dose of the vaccine, the minister said. The fatality rate was significantly lower among people who had received the complete vaccine dose.
He said he expected the booster vaccination rate among the people to see some increase, as per President Joko Widodo’s directives, so that COVID-19 transmission could be prevented.
“The President gave directives, booster vaccinations must be (expedited). On some community activities, we will impose booster vaccine requirement in order to protect the people–should they get infected, they will not get hospitalized, or even die,” he added.
