Surakarta, Central Java The Indonesian contingent has emerged victorious as the 2022 ASEAN Para Games (APG) general champion after securing at least one medal in every competition of the multi-sport event.
Before the ASEAN Para Games closing ceremony at Manahan Stadium, Surakarta, Central Java, the Indonesia contingent successfully bagged 177 gold, 141 silver, and 110 bronze medals.
By taking first place in the current edition, Indonesia has managed to successfully defend its general champion title for two consecutive editions. It had won at the previous ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In the current edition, para-athletics was the highest contributor to the medal tally of the Indonesian contingent, fetching 63 gold, 44 silver, and 24 bronze medals.
Para-swimming athletes achieved a total of 29 gold, 31 silver, and 27 bronze medals, while para-table tennis athletes won 27 gold, 16 silver, and 22 bronze medals.
Para-powerlifting athletes contributed 18 gold and 6 bronze medals to the national tally, while para-chess athletes clinched 13 gold, 19 silver, and 8 bronze medals, and para-badminton players won 13 gold, 9 silver, and 8 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, blind judo para-athletes claimed nine gold, five silver, and three bronze medals, while para-archery athletes secured three gold, three silver, and four bronze medals.
Boccia contributed one gold, four silver, and six bronze medals, and sitting volleyball para-athletes snatched one gold medal and one bronze medal.
However, the Indonesian contingent failed to strike gold only in four sports: wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, cerebral palsy (CP) football, and goalball.
The Indonesian contingent managed two bronze medals in wheelchair basketball, two silver medals and two bronze medals in wheelchair tennis, one silver medal in CP football, and one silver medal and one bronze medal in goalball.
Chef de Mission (CdM), Andi Herman, said that the national contingent has largely fulfilled the target set by the CdM.
“All the targets set by the CdM have been fulfilled all except in one, namely CP football, when we lost the penalty against Thailand. We got only a silver medal despite our prediction (of getting a) gold medal,” Herman added.
