Indonesian gov’t appoints spokespersons for G20 Presidency

The Indonesian government has appointed the spokespersons for its G20 Presidency, Communications and Informatics Minister Johnny Gerard Plate said at a press conference here on Monday.

The government has categorized the issues that the intergovernmental forum will take up into two meeting tracks — the Sherpa Track and the Financial Track, he informed.

The Sherpa Track will discuss non-financial economic issues, such as energy, development, tourism, digital economy, education, labor, agriculture, trade, investment, industry, health, corruption, environment, and climate change, the minister said.

Meanwhile, the other track will prioritize six economic issues: exit policy for post-pandemic global economic recovery, the impact of COVID-19 on the real economic sector, digital payment systems, sustainable finance, financial inclusion, and international taxation, he added.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, and Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi have been appointed as spokespersons for the Sherpa Track, Plate informed.

They will concurrently act as the chairperson and deputy chairperson of the track, respectively, he said.

Furthermore, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati and Governor of Bank Indonesia, Perry Warjiyo, will be the chairperson and deputy chairperson – as well as spokespersons — for the Financial Track, respectively, the minister informed.

Minister Plate said he has been tasked with providing general information regarding the implementation of Indonesia’s G20 Presidency.

Meanwhile, head of the Presidential Staff Office, Moeldoko, will inform about special issues related to President Joko Widodo’s policies regarding the 2022 G20, Plate added.

Indonesia’s 2022 G20 Presidency will focus on three main issues: transition to sustainable energy, development of the global health system, and economic and digital transformation.

The 2022 G20 is important for Indonesia since it is the first time the country is hosting the forum. In addition, it is the first developing country to lead the grouping, which yields considerable influence on global economic and social policies.

Last week, the ministry launched G20pedia, an electronic handbook, to strengthen public understanding of the intergovernmental forum, which can be accessed through linktr.ee/g20pedia and the official G20 website, www.g20.org.
