Jakarta: Freedom of expression within Indonesia's civic space is increasingly under threat, with youth organizations continuously grappling with the challenges posed by this restrictive environment. A recent study by Yayasan Partisipasi Muda (Youth Participation Foundation) highlights the growing fears among Indonesian youth regarding the expression of opinions, alongside a lack of protection, experiences of intimidation and violence during gatherings, barriers to civic engagement, and discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, and religion.

According to UN Women, amidst these challenges, the Lingkar Studi Feminis (Feminist Study Circle) has emerged as a resilient force, maintaining its presence since its founding in 2019. Initially established as a feminist book discussion circle, the organization has expanded its reach, now offering a variety of programs and activities aimed at gender-based advocacy, gender-responsive budgeting, feminist legal theory, and legal aid.

Lingkar Studi Feminis has actively participated in advocacy and campaigns on both regional and national levels. Notably, it has contributed to the implementation of integrated standard operating procedures for handling cases of sexual violence in South Tangerang City and Tangerang Regency. Additionally, the organization plays a crucial role in legal cases concerning sexual violence and HIV/AIDS.

To promote women's political participation and integrate the feminist agenda, Lingkar Studi Feminis conducts mentoring and political education for women on school campuses, encouraging them to assume leadership roles in campus organizations. "The sense of sisterhood among women has ultimately made us more confident," Eva Nurcahyani, a founder of Lingkar Studi Feminis, shared in an interview.

Despite its achievements, the organization faces challenges. Many of its members are university students, whose academic and personal commitments often limit their active participation. Furthermore, Lingkar Studi Feminis has encountered opposition, notably from masculinist student groups, one of which disrupted a discussion session in 2020, accusing the organization of promoting anti-male sentiments. In response, Lingkar Studi Feminis seeks potential allies, including lecturers and other women's organizations.

Ensuring sustainability, Lingkar Studi Feminis regularly conducts training and awareness-raising on feminist issues and political education. The organization partners with other women's groups to foster feminist values and sustain the movement. While seeking funding, Lingkar Studi Feminis is cautious about donor dependence. "Some people are skeptical about donors... That's why we keep rotating our methods, so that even without donors, we can keep going," Nurcahyani explained, highlighting their strategy of setting aside monthly funds to ensure continued operation.
