Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Laksana Tri Handoko stated that Indonesia’s G20 presidency in 2022 offers a vital momentum for Indonesia to play a more active role in the research and innovation sector.
“We want to make the most of the momentum of Indonesia’s G20 presidency to play a more active role in the research and innovation sector,” Handoko stated during a press conference held at the BJ Habibie building of BRIN here on Wednesday.
The G20 is an international forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union that work together to handle major issues. Indonesia is holding the presidency of the grouping this year.
Handoko pressed for cooperation with various parties and countries in research and innovation activities, so that Indonesia’s G20 presidency can serve as a momentum to strengthen Indonesia’s position as a partner for research and innovation collaborations with G20 member countries.
Indonesia and the other G20 member countries can form a research collaboration platform to boost the economy and improve the welfare of communities in G20 member countries, one of which concerns biodiversity.
The BRIN head noted that Indonesia’s rich land and sea biodiversity had been the country’s main capital to become a center for biodiversity research and innovation collaborations.
The BRIN has initiated a collaboration platform between researchers through the Global Biodiversity Research and Innovation Platform (GBRIP) at the G20 Research and Innovation Initiative Gathering (RIIG), which is a side event of Indonesia’s G20 Presidency.
“We want to ‘sell’ Indonesia’s position as a large country with a large population, with rich biodiversity of the land and sea,” he remarked.
The GBRIP pushes collaborations to share infrastructures, facilities, and funding in research and innovation on biodiversity.
