Indonesia’s hosting of GPDRR a success: minister

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy, has described Indonesia’s hosting of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction meeting in Bali from May 23–28, 2022, as a success.

“Indonesia has succeeded in hosting the GPDRR meeting, which was conducted in a sustainable and inclusive manner,” the minister said, according to a written statement received here on Tuesday.

He made the remark after leading a ministerial meeting (RTM) held to evaluate the GPDRR meeting.

Effendy said he believes that the GPDRR cemented Indonesia’s capacity as the leader of the G20, as it consequentially demonstrated its ability in disaster mitigation.

The event served as a good way to showcase Indonesia’s attractiveness to the world, he remarked.

The GPDRR activities made an important contribution to the socioeconomic recovery process in Bali, he added.

“The GPDRR in Bali on May 23–28, 2022, has also succeeded in showing Indonesia’s readiness to organize international-scale activities because, based on the evaluation, this activity did not (cause a) significant increase in COVID-19 cases due to (the observance of) strict health protocols,” he highlighted.

The GPDRR also functioned as a reminder for the public to continue to be alert to disaster risks and encouraged them to proactively make disaster risk reduction efforts.

“Through GPDRR activities, it is expected that the public will also understand and know more about ways to reduce the risk of disasters,” he said.

He commended all stakeholders’ collective hard work in hosting the international-scale event, which went successfully from the beginning to the end.

“We would like to thank the entire national committee for their support and participation in the successful GPDRR,” he said.

He further said he expects the success of the GPDRR meeting to be replicated at more international-scale events in the future.

“For example, the G20 Summit, then World Tourism Day in September, and World Conference On Creative Economy (WCCE) in October,” the minister added.
