Jakarta Health Office combs hospitals for acute kidney failure data

The Jakarta Health Office is getting in touch with all hospitals in the capital to gather any data on acute kidney failure cases that may have not been collected to ensure that the cases can be handled without delay.

Speaking here on Friday, head of the office, Widyastuti, urged hospitals to disseminate information and educate the public and health workers concerning the Health Ministry circular on the withdrawal of medicinal syrup products for the time being.

In addition, the office is coordinating with the ministry and central vertical hospitals to educate health workers to facilitate acute kidney failure handling.

According to Jakarta Health Office data, in the period from January to October 19, 2022, a total of 40 infants who received medical treatment in Jakarta passed away.

There were also 71 cases of acute kidney failure that mostly affected children under the age of six.

At least 16 children are still undergoing treatment, while 15 others have been declared recovered.

The Jakarta Health Office said that the initial symptoms of acute kidney failure include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, cough, and cold.

The advanced symptoms include a decline in urination frequency and urine quantity, swelling, loss of consciousness, and shortness of breath.

Patients should be brought to health facilities within 12 hours of the presenting of symptoms of fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and decline in urination frequency.

“The earlier it is detected, the better the recovery will be if it is specially handled,” she said.

Measures that have been undertaken to prevent acute kidney failure have included meeting the daily fluid requirement according to age and the consumption of complete food with balanced nutrition.

In addition, people must adopt a healthy lifestyle, avoid taking medicines without a doctor’s prescription.

The office urged people not to panic, but to remain alert, especially if children’s urination frequency and amount decline.
