Jakarta plant to convert waste into fuel

The Jakarta provincial government is targeting to process around 2,000 tons of waste into 750 tons of waste-based alternative fuel per day at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java.

“This project is expected to become a solution for the downstream management of waste sent to Bantargebang,” Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said at the virtual commemoration of the 2022 National Waste Care Day on Monday.

The project is expected to reduce landfill waste at Bantargebang TPST, he added.

According to the Governor, as much as 1,000 tons of six-year-old waste and 1,000 tons of new waste sent to Bantargebang TPST will be processed at the Landfill Mining and Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) waste processing plant.

The processed waste will then be used as alternative fuel or new renewable energy to replace coal, he informed.

“This alternative fuel is environmentally friendly for air quality,” Baswedan said.

At the commemoration of the 2022 National Waste Care Day at Bantargebang TPST, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the construction of the waste processing facility.

Speaking at the ceremony, head of the Jakarta Environmental Service, Asep Kuswanto, informed that the waste processing facility will be constructed by PT Adhi Karya and PT Jaya Konstruksi Manggala Pratama.

The two companies were chosen as the project’s operators through an auction held at the end of 2021, he informed.

However, he did not provide details on the value of the joint investment for the waste processing facility.

“This development is targeted in stages and by God’s will, it will be completed in the third quarter of 2022,” he said.

Later, the waste-based fuel will be used for power generation and the cement industry, he added.

Two companies, namely PT SBI and Indocement, have agreed to purchase the waste-based fuel from the plant for their factories, Kuswanto said.
