Bangkok: Kla Tham has reiterated his stance that the Trump tariffs must have the least impact on farmers. He expressed readiness to act as a representative for the people if the issue is brought to the House of Representatives.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Akkhasan Khiri Lohwira, MP for Chaiyaphum and spokesperson for the Kla Dharma Party, commented on the outcomes of reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States. These talks followed President Donald Trump’s executive order imposing a 19% import tariff on Thai goods, which came into effect on August 1st. Mr. Lohwira explained that Lt. Col. Thammanat Prompao, MP for Phayao and advisor to the Kla Dharma Party, had previously stressed the party’s commitment to negotiate tariffs. The goal is to allow American goods, especially agricultural and livestock products, to enter Thailand with minimal impact on Thai farmers.
Mr. Lohwira further mentioned that if any adverse effects arise, the government should be prepared to provide fair remedies. He emphasized that all imported agricultural products must comply with Thai law. Kla Dharma Party MPs are prepared to voice public concerns in Parliament if necessary. They have already conveyed their apprehensions to the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, who plans to discuss the proposal with the Cabinet to expedite a resolution to the issue.
