Institutional strengthening of the National Commission for Disability is a pre-requisite for the commitment
Jakarta The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) emphasized the need to institutionally strengthen the National Commission for Disability (KND) for meeting the commitment to respect, protect, and fulfill the rights of persons with disabilities.
“Institutional strengthening of the National Commission for Disability is a pre-requisite for the commitment,” KSP expert staff Sunarman Sukamto stated here on Saturday.
Sukamto conveyed the statement at the discussion titled “Strengthening the National Commission for Disability for the Advancement, Fulfillment, and Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” on Wednesday (October 19).
The institutional reinforcement of KND aligns with President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi’s) message that efforts to boost commitment and fulfillment of disability rights are aimed at driving progress of the nation’s civilization.
Sukamto said, the KSP, so far, supports the strengthening of KND through KSP’s duty of quality assurance for the president’s priority and strategic programs.
He expressed optimism that the KND would conduct its main duties and functions of monitoring, evaluating, and advocating the commitment to respect, protect, and fulfill the rights of persons with disabilities.
Meanwhile, KND Chairperson, Dante Rigmalia, praised the support given by various parties, including the KSP.
“As a new national human rights institution, the National Commission for Disabilities lauds the support of various parties, the KSP, ministries, other national human rights institutions, and civil society organizations,” Rigmalia stated.
Fajri Nursyamsi from the Indonesian Center for Law and Policy Studies noted that three challenges and opportunities existed for the KND.
“They are institutional structure, the scope of work, and communication network that have been built so far,” Nursyamsi stated.
On Thursday (October 20), in Jakarta, at the High-level Intergovernmental Meeting on the Final Review of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities (HLIGM-FRPD), the KND voiced the importance of equalizing education, employment, and accessibility in Indonesia.
