The Manokwari district government in West Papua is expecting the Home Affairs Ministry to issue a recommendation for establishing a regional government-owned company (BUMD) soon.
“Once the recommendation is issued, we will discuss it (the plan to set up the BUMD) with the Manokwari District Legislative Council (DPRD),” head of the regional economic section of the Manokwari district government, Rishard H. Alfons, said in Manokwari on Tuesday.
The establishment of the BUMD is aimed at accelerating economic growth, improving public services, and boosting regional fiscal capacity and local incomes, he informed.
To establish the BUMD, the district government is awaiting the results of a feasibility study conducted by Papua University (UNIPA), he said.
“With this, we will know what core business can be developed in Manokwari district through the BUMD. We are waiting for the result of the study conducted by UNIPA,” he added.
On Tuesday afternoon, the district administration held the first round of focus group discussions to identify the needs and feasible businesses for the BUMD.
Alfons said the discussion was focused on a variety of businesses that will be integrated into a core business.
The core business will cover trade, tourism, industry, agriculture, and energy.
“However, we are still waiting for the study to see what is the core business (that can be chosen),” he said.
