Meteorological Department says there are no signs of storm formation in the South China Sea

The Meteorological Department stated that from now until mid-October, which is the end of the rainy season in northern Thailand, there is still no sign of a storm forming near Thailand. It indicated that a new storm may form in the Pacific Ocean, but the path of movement is expected to be towards Japan.

Mr. Somkuan Tonjan, Director of the Weather Forecast Division, Meteorological Department, said that from today until mid-October, there are still no signs of storm formation in the South China Sea. Currently, the rainy season in upper Thailand is nearing the end and it is expected that the winter season will enter in the third week of October. The cold air mass from China has begun to spread down to cover the area. The rain will gradually decrease. There may be rain and thunderstorms in some areas from the collision of the cold air mass spreading down with the warmer air mass.

In the statistics of storms in the Pacific Ocean, an average of 27 storms occur per year, with 18 already occurring. For the statist
ics of storms that have a chance of moving into Thailand, an average of 1-2 storms per year, currently 1 has arrived, which is Storm Soulik. Therefore, the remaining 9 storms in the Pacific Ocean, if they will enter Thailand, will move in a direction from east to west, entering the southern region in October to December, which is the rainy season in the southern region. As for the upper region, it is believed that there will be no storms and the amount of rain in the area will increase.

Mr. Somkuan added that during 8-9 October 2024, the southern region will experience more rain and some heavy rain, especially in the southern region on the Gulf of Thailand coast because the cold air mass will start to cover Thailand. The monsoon trough will move down across the southern region. Strong winds in areas with thunderstorms will occur. In the upper part of the country, the rain will decrease, but the western part of the northern and central regions, including Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Tak, Kanchanaburi, U
thai Thani, and Ratchaburi, will still experience rain and thunderstorms, so the accumulated rainfall must be monitored. This is the season of change from the rainy season to the winter season. In the morning, the weather will start to cool down. Then, between 10-16 October 2024, the cold air mass covering Thailand will weaken, causing the wind to change direction. Rain will start to return again, which can still occur in the western part of the northern region, the lower central region, the eastern region, Bangkok and its vicinity, and the southern region.

In the next two days, the low pressure area in the Pacific Ocean may develop into a storm, but it will move towards Japan.
