Minister aims to get 45,000 tourism human resources certified

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahudin Uno is aiming to have 45 thousand tourism human resources certified in 2022–2023.

The initiative is a part of the ministry’s programs to expedite the recovery of the tourism and creative economy sector and improve its productivity, he explained.

It would involve upskilling (competence improvement), reskilling (competence bolstering), and new skilling (adding new competence), he said during the virtual “Certification of Tourism Human Resource and Competency-Based Standards Unveiling/Kick Off” on Friday.

The two programs have been initiated by the resource and institution deputy at the ministry and will utilize an overseas loan from the World Bank.

Uno said he expects the programs to create job and business opportunities for tourism and creative human resources.

The programs are also part of the implementation of the ministry’s main strategies: innovation, adaptation, and collaboration.

To this end, the ministry is collaborating with the World Bank to implement the Indonesia Tourism Development Project (ITDP) with the help of a loan.

The minister said he believes that the tourism and creative economy sector has the potential to absorb a lot of manpower and create as many as jobs possible.

Resource and institution acting deputy at the ministry, Frans Teguh, said that the kick-off event was a part of the Tourism Human Resources Competence Development and Acknowledgment Program.

The goal of the program is to ensure the continuity of skilled manpower supply for the tourism sector with proof of competence in the form of a competence certificate, he explained.

The competence certificate will be issued by the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) in the six priority tourism destinations, he added.

The Certification Program will target 18 thousand people in 2022 and 27 thousand people in 2023. Thus, the total target will be 45 thousand people.
