Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi has invited all students in the country to promote road traffic safety.
As the nation’s young generation, students can play an important role in reducing the rate of road accidents, the majority of which involve students aged 15–19 years, he said.
“From the number of road traffic accidents, most of them are students or teenagers who are still emotionally unstable,” Sumadi noted at the “2022 National-Level Selection of Traffic and Road Transport Safety Pioneer Students” event here on Thursday.
He said that the event themed “Indonesia’s Future Transport” was held to award a number of students who were chosen to be “pioneers” of road traffic safety.
The minister asked the selected students to invite and remind their friends to maintain safety on the road.
It is important to continuously carry out education regarding road safety to improve the community’s awareness on this aspect, he noted.
“Every day around the world, there are many victims of road traffic accidents. We want the number to be reduced or even (brought) to no accidents,” he said.
At the same event, the ministry’s director general of land transportation, Hendro Sugiatno, explained that the selection of “pioneer” students was carried out as an effort to reduce the rate of road accidents, especially those involving students or teenagers.
The selections took place from September 12 to 15, 2022, with a total of 37 students participating from 17 provinces.
To improve their understanding of road traffic safety, the participants were provided with a number of educational materials, namely on motivation and self-development, safety campaign management, Transportation Ministry’s school dissemination, road traffic safety behaviors among students, public speaking, mechanic school, handling traffic accident victims, and drug abuse among teenagers.
