Minister stresses importance of weighing accuracy to protect consumers

Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan conveyed the importance of accuracy in measuring scales and measurements according to the applicable regulations

“The Directorate of Metrology is an important place in terms of ensuring the accuracy of measurements, meters, and scales in the market,” Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan stated during a working visit to the Directorate of Metrology in Bandung, West Java, on Monday.

Based on Antara’s observation, the trade minister conducted a review of the laboratory as well as provided direction to the leaders and employees of the Directorate of Metrology.

Hasan said the visit aimed to ensure that the implementation of consumer protection could continue to be implemented, especially in maintaining the accuracy of the scales and measurements.

Trade Minister Hasan had earlier attended the “Implementation of the Use of Digitalization in the Payment and Distribution System” that was held at Pasar Baru Cicalengka, Bandung District, on Monday morning.

The minister pushed for expediting digitization of the people’s market to all stakeholders, so that the People’s Market Digitization Program in Indonesia could be utilized massively.

“I really hope that the digitalization of trade conducted in the people’s market and MSMEs can be one of the efforts to accelerate advanced and inclusive economic growth,” he affirmed.

He said that the Ministry of Trade is targeting the acceleration of digitization in one thousand people’s markets and one million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) traders across Indonesia.

According to Hasan, Indonesia, with more than 64 million MSMEs, has vast potential to accelerate digital transformation of the trade sector and contribute to the growth of Indonesia’s digital economy.

“However, do not let the digitalization of this market affect the closing of conventional markets. This means that an online ecosystem is built and an offline ecosystem is developed,” Minister Hasan said.

The traditional market digitalization system could increase the number of orders from buyers to sellers by 56 folds, Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan earlier stated after surveying Pasar Baru Cicalengka.

The digitalization system or online trade can facilitate transactions between sellers and buyers. This market digitalization system became one of the directives of President Joko Widodo to the Ministry of Trade.

Through digitalization, people can conduct transactions without having to go to the market themselves, he remarked.

Under the efforts to transform the traditional market, Hasan aims to have one million sellers to utilize the system. He expects that success stories of markets that utilize the digital system can spread to other markets.
