Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi visited the Tanah Kuning-Mangkupadi Indonesia Green Industry Zone (KIHI) in Bulungan District, North Kalimantan, to monitor progress in its development designated as a National Strategic Project.
The visit to North Kalimantan is a follow-up to President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi’s) instruction to expedite development of the green industry zone in North Kalimantan last July, Sumadi stated here, Friday.
North Kalimantan Governor Zainal A. Paliwang accompanied the minister during the visit to the megaproject.
“We will monitor the port construction site in Tanah Kuning region,” Paliwang stated.
He said President Jokowi had instructed relevant authorities to expedite the development of supporting infrastructures for the green industry zone.
“Mr President requested us to develop connectivity infrastructures there, so Minister Sumadi’s visit here is to follow up on the president’s instruction,” the governor affirmed.
As a national strategic project, the local authority is expediting the fulfilment of administrative necessity and infrastructure development for the Tanah Kuning-Mangkupadi green industry zone, he noted.
During his visit to the national strategic project site last year, the president stated that the green industry zone will be the largest of its kind in the world and will be instrumental in new economic transformation in Indonesia.
Four companies — PT Kalimantan Industrial Park Indonesia, PT Kawasan Industri Kawasan Indonesia, PT Industri Strategis Indonesia, and PT Kayan Patria Propertindo — have been designated as operators of the new green industry zone spanning 30 thousand hectares.
Investment value of the green industry zone is expected to reach Rp1,800 trillion originating from private entrepreneurs. The industry zone is also expected to provide jobs for 60 thousand construction workers.
Hydrogen and ammonia production, an aluminium smelter, and electric vehicle battery factories are among the industries expected to operate in the green industry zone.
