Ministers review readiness for PON opening ceremony

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, and Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, on Thursday reviewed readiness for the XX PON opening ceremony in Papua.

“We have done a final check on the readiness of the committee, and everything went well,” Mahfud said, as quoted on the official website of InfoPublik here on Thursday.

In his remark, he said the committee’s readiness for the PON opening ceremony had reached 100 percent.

According to him, the security for the opening of the PON has been prepared well. The public and invitees who will attend the opening ceremony will undergo a security inspection, he added.

Chairman of the daily affairs of the PON XX Organizing Committee Papua, Yunus Wonda, said that performances during the PON opening at the Lukas Enembe Stadium will mainly involve local residents of Papua.

“All dancers (who will perform at the opening ceremony) are Papua’s local talents,” he informed.

Wonda appealed to those planning to attend the PON opening ceremony to comply with the health protocols, including all the requirements set by the committee.

“Health protocols are important; anyone who enters (the stadium) must have been vaccinated twice,” he said.

The opening ceremony of the PON XX National Games is scheduled to take place on October 2, 2021, at the Lukas Enembe Stadium in Jayapura. The national games will be opened by President Joko Widodo.

Earlier, secretary general of the Indonesian Sports Council (KONI), Ade Lukman, revealed that the opening ceremony on Saturday night will showcase the natural beauty of Papua.

The XX PON 2021 will be held on October 2-15, 2021. At least 6,400 athletes and 3,500 officials from 34 provinces across Indonesia are expected to participate in the event, which will feature 37 sports.
