Preservation of upstream water sources is one of the important attempts in addition to conservation attempt on the coastal area.
Buleleng, Bali (ANTARA) – The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) Ministry has launched a water preservation program at Lake Tamblingan, Buleleng District, Bali Province, in collaboration with Kauhan Ubud Temple Foundation and Mpu Kuturan Singaraja Hindu State High School (STAHN).
“Preservation of upstream water sources is one of the important attempts in addition to conservation attempt in the coastal area,” KKP Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said at the lake on Sunday.
Although many lakes throughout Indonesia is being utilized and exploited for various economic activities, such as the cultivation of fish in the floating fish cages, the condition of Lake Tamblingan is still well-maintained, he noted.
Hence, the minister is delighted with the condition of the lake.
He went on to say that the water preservation program is very important to maintain the ecosystem of Lake Tamblingan since the lake has a crucial role in supporting the activities of the local residents as one of their main water sources, especially for irrigating the rice fields.
The water preservation program aims to raise public awareness of the importance of springs for humans.
The program will also implement a number of action plans for one year, such as eco-pedagogical curriculum-based learning in schools, eco-pedagogy-based student study service (KKN), as well as tree adoption activities in the Lake Tamblingan – which has an area of 1,336.5 hectares — and Alas Mertajati area.
In addition, the action plan will also support the initiation of environmental conservation for traditional villages in the buffer zone of the lake; educate the forest guard (jaga wana) groups in the upstream area; and make documentation of existing water resources in the Tamblingan area and its buffer zone.
The launch of the water conservation program was marked with the release of 100,000 patchouli fish seeds by Trenggono and the head of Buleleng District, Putu Agus Suradnyana.
The fish seeds are brought from the Sukabumi Freshwater Aquaculture Center.
The minister also donated a biofloc technology package worth Rp200 million (US$13.64 thousand) to the community to implement environmentally friendly fish farming.
