Surin: The Ministry of Commerce is taking significant steps to promote Surin Province by preparing to register ‘Surin Beef’ as a new Geographical Indication (GI) product. This premium-grade meat, known for its marbling fat akin to Japanese beef, is produced from a hybrid of local and 100% Wagyu breeds. The initiative aims to create sustainable opportunities and boost income for the local community.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Kunakorn Preechachanachai, Advisor to the Minister of Commerce, announced that the Department of Intellectual Property is set to register ‘Surin Beef’. This high-quality beef, characterized by its pink-red hue and marbling score of 3 or higher based on Japanese standards, offers a delectable taste and tender texture without any unpleasant smell when cooked. The cattle are raised using a diet of superior-quality grass and rice by-products from Surin Province, such as rice straw, rice bran, and rice husks, which contribute to their healthy growth and weight gain. Surin’s favorable climate further supports the health and well-being of the cattle, ensuring they remain robust and free from illness. The beef production process adheres to international standards, with an annual output exceeding 144,000 kilograms and a market value surpassing 43 million baht.
Mr. Kunakorn emphasized that GI products embody local identity and cultural wisdom, serving as a form of soft power linked to geographic locations. These products can transmit unique identities globally and play a crucial role in creating jobs and generating income for communities.
