NDMC Issues Weather Warning Amid Rehabilitation Efforts in Flood-Stricken Areas

Bangkok: The National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (NDPO) has issued a weather alert for Thailand, anticipating unstable conditions from October 19 to 21, due to a cold air mass from China affecting the North and Northeast regions. This forecast comes as the country continues to recover from recent flooding, with significant rehabilitation progress reported in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province.

According to Thai News Agency, the NDPO has highlighted the potential for another round of rainfall in the North and Northeast, which could exacerbate the current flood situation. The Weather Resources Information Institute (WRI) has advised monitoring for flash floods and urban area flooding, particularly in Central, Eastern, and Southern regions including major areas such as Bangkok, Chon Buri, and Chumphon.

The Meteorological Department further warned of thunderstorms and heavy rains due to the cold air front, with weather expected to turn even colder post-October 22. Meanwhile, rehabilitation eff
orts are well underway in the Mae Sai District of Chiang Rai. Mr. Jirayu Huangsap of the Flood, Storm and Landslide Relief Operation Center reported a 96% completion in the rehabilitation of infrastructure, with full completion expected by October 21.

Additional preventive measures against future flooding are being discussed, including the proposal for a flood barrier along the Sai and Ruak Rivers. A resolution from today’s meeting of the Subcommittee on Navigation Rights will be forwarded to the Thai-Myanmar Joint Committee for further action.
