NFT can be a solution to prevent piracy: Ministry

The Non-Fungible Token (NFT) technology can be a solution to prevent piracy, the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s Intellectual Property Directorate General stated.

This is because the blockchain system enables more secure management and storage of digital identities, the ministry’s official, Anggoro Dasananto, noted through a written statement on Friday.

However, a method should be in place to ensure that the works uploaded within the NFT system are truly those belonging to the people, who uploaded them first, he emphasized.

To this end, the government is holding discussions regarding a regulation that can handle the advancements in technology, especially in the field of intellectual property.

The ministry seeks to ensure that every form of expression, be it music, songs, books, and performance arts, can be well-appreciated by those who enjoy them.

“NFT is a technology that basically brings benefits but also challenges art creators,” Dasananto remarked.

Meanwhile, a painter named Astuti Kusumi noted that advancements in technology had facilitated artwork marketing and business development.

Currently, artists can have broader access to exhibit their works and interact with their audience owing to information technology.

“There is a demand for technology for certain artists. However, traditional artists bear the negative impacts of the existence of technology,” she explained.

She expects the government to provide broader dissemination of information, so that all artists develop a basic understanding of trademark protection.

The goal is to ensure that artists do not experience difficulties when their works are plagiarized or claimed by other people.

Dispute Prevention and Resolution Coordinator at the Directorate General Ahmad Rifaldi noted that the institution has an alternative dispute resolution service for parties involved in intellectual property-related cases.

Copyright owners should conduct mediation first as stipulated within the law. Mediation is one of the alternative dispute resolutions that did not consume much time and was affordable in terms of the cost.
