NSC Secretary-General Stresses Continuation of Peace Talks in Southern Border Provinces

Bangkok: The Secretary-General of the National Security Council (NSC) reiterated the government’s commitment to advancing peace talks in the southern border provinces, despite the expiration of the statute of limitations in the Tak Bai case. He emphasized that relevant agencies would handle the case according to established legal processes.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chatchai Bangchuad, the NSC Secretary-General, addressed the Southern Border Peace Committee to outline the government’s policy on promoting peace in the conflict-ridden southern border provinces. He clarified that while the Tak Bai case’s statute of limitations has expired, it remains a separate issue from the peace dialogue, which is a government priority.

The NSC highlighted the necessity of adhering to government policy in managing affairs in the southern border regions, with a particular focus on maintaining and advancing the peace dialogue process. This initiative aims to address and resolve the ongoing conflicts in the area.

The
peace talks are a cornerstone of the government’s strategy for the administration and development of the southern border provinces. The form that these talks will take remains to be determined, contingent on government directives. The Secretary-General noted that the Tak Bai case and the peace talks are interconnected but distinct, with the former to proceed through the judicial system independently of the latter.

The ongoing dialogue is viewed positively, with the potential to reduce violence and create a more relaxed atmosphere in the region. Mr. Bangchuad expressed confidence that the peace talks could play a crucial role in resolving the conflict, pending government orders and the preparation of a dedicated dialogue team.
