The Airline Association – Civil Aviation Authority organized the event ‘THAI AVIATION SUSTAINABILITY DAY 2024’ heading towards sustainable aviation and ready to deal with the Net Zero challenge, finding ways to help airlines, piloting the use of SAF to increase costs.
Thai Airlines Association, in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, organized the ‘Thai Aviation Sustainability Day 2024’ at the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Participants included government and private sectors, airlines, and supporting partners including Thai Airways International Public Company Limited, PTT Oil and Retail Business Public Company Limited, Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited, and Mitr Phol Biofuel Co., Ltd. The event focused on presenting visions, strategies, and challenges in the transition to Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector, along with exchanging views from experts in the energy and environmental industries.
Mr. Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, President of Bangkok Airways
Public Company Limited and President of the Thai Airlines Association, gave an opening speech emphasizing the importance of sustainability preparation in the Thai aviation industry and sharing his vision to develop and push the industry forward under the framework of sustainability.
Mr. Suttipong Kongpool, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, gave a special lecture on ‘Thailand’s Roadmap to Aviation Net Zero’, emphasizing the government’s support in helping the aviation industry achieve its greenhouse gas reduction target by 2050, including the proactive use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Ready to give an additional interview about the initial approach that airlines will use together to aim for net zero greenhouse gas emissions, which is to pilot the use of sustainable aviation fuel or SAF, starting at 1 percent and increasing the proportion to 3-5 percent by 2027, but accepting that airlines will have to incur higher costs from the price of sustainable aviation fuel. This will require
discussions with the Ministry of Energy about ways to help operators, including the proportion of mixing this type of fuel.
Mr. Tassapon Bijleveld, Chairman of the Executive Board of Thai AirAsia Co., Ltd. and Vice President of Thai Airline Association, expressed his confidence that from working together and sharing experiences in sustainability, we have seen significant progress in achieving the goals according to the plan, along with clear and measurable actions. He also confirmed that the ‘aviation industry’ will continue to be an important driving force in connecting people economically and socially, while creating the least impact on the environment.
The event featured a variety of seminars, such as ‘Understanding Airlines Strategies in Meeting Net Zero’, which focused on preparation and strategy planning for the era of clean aviation; a presentation on the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by experts highlighting the importance of developing alternative energy innovations to help reduce c
arbon emissions from the aviation sector; and a seminar on CORSIA and the carbon credit market in Thailand to raise awareness of Thailand’s role on the world stage and prepare for carbon credit development to respond to CORSIA regulations under the Paris Agreement.
Organizing ‘Thai Aviation Sustainability Day 2024’ this time is another important step to enhance understanding and operations in terms of sustainability of the Thai aviation industry towards achieving the Net Zero target by 2050 in a tangible manner.
