BANGKOK: A deputy spokesperson for the Pheu Thai Party has criticized Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Vejjayachai for alleged bias and narrow-mindedness in the ongoing debate regarding the draft bill on the organization of the Ministry of Defense. The spokesperson emphasized the importance of allowing all political parties to propose legislation, while underscoring the necessity for the bill to pass a screening committee.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Jirawat Aranyakanon, the deputy spokesperson, highlighted that the enactment of any draft bill is the responsibility of the House of Representatives, where members must debate and express their opinions before a law can be enforced. He noted that laws can be proposed through various channels, including the public sector, government sector, and by members of the House of Representatives collectively.
Mr. Jirawat explained that the drafting process for the Defense Ministry Administration Act involves collaboration between the Ministry of Defense and the mili
tary to ensure the law is updated to reflect societal changes and national defense needs. After revisions, the draft law is submitted to the Cabinet for feedback before being presented to the House of Representatives.
He further clarified that a draft bill proposed by a Pheu Thai Party MP represents a personal opinion and not the official stance of the party, as it has not been reviewed by the party’s Law Screening Committee or discussed in party meetings.
Addressing criticisms of Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham, Mr. Jirawat described such views as biased and overly narrow. He asserted that the government’s role is to serve the people and not any specific government agency, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between the Ministry of Defense and the military for public benefit. He warned that legal actions would be taken against those not complying with the law or deserting the military.
