Singapore: Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has revealed ongoing communications with Cambodian leaders, emphasizing Thailand’s commitment to non-confrontation. The focus is on resolving the Bok Channel issue through the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) to find a peaceful solution.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham made these remarks during an interview at the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, the largest security forum in the Asia-Pacific region. Discussing the Thai-Cambodian border situation, he noted improvements and reiterated both countries’ commitment to avoiding confrontation. An appointment has been made for the JBC to meet, with the meeting expected within the next week.
Coordination has been maintained with the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Royal Thai Army, and the Royal Thai Armed Forces, with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces participating in discussions. Mr. Phumtham reassured that there is no cause for concern, stating, “Thailan
d adheres to the principle of non-confrontation and tries to find a peaceful solution, and we are neighbors to each other.”
Regarding ministerial-level talks with Cambodia, Mr. Phumtham confirmed ongoing meetings and continuous opportunities for dialogue aimed at maintaining peace and order in the region.
