BANGKOK: Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Vejjayachai has reaffirmed the coalition government’s clear stance on not amending Section 112 of the Amnesty Act, emphasizing the need for detailed discussions regardless of differing opinions within the coalition.
According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham addressed the Pheu Thai Party’s position on the special committee’s report concerning the amnesty bill, stating that the matter needs thorough examination in the parliament. He noted that the Prime Minister had already provided answers on October 21, asserting that there was a consensus among all parties not to invoke Section 112, as it was a precondition for forming the government.
Phumtham clarified the separation of duties between the executive and the parliament, indicating that while both branches work collaboratively to address public issues, they maintain distinct responsibilities. He emphasized that legislative matters are managed by parliamentary whips, who deliberate on each law. He hig
hlighted that despite potential disagreements, discussions are essential for resolving differences. Phumtham reiterated that the government has demonstrated cooperation on various issues and that the Prime Minister has addressed both areas of agreement and disagreement within the coalition.
In response to questions about the differentiation between the roles of the executive and the parliament, Phumtham acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue, as highlighted by the Prime Minister.
