Pichai Chunhavajira Addresses BOT Board Nomination Concerns Amid Online Rumors.

Bangkok: Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, addressed the ongoing concerns regarding the selection of a new chairman for the Bank of Thailand (BOT) board. The selection committee has postponed its meeting to 11 November to discuss the replacement of Mr. Kittiratt Na Ranong, initially proposed by the Ministry of Finance.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pichai stated he did not instruct anyone to propose a new candidate but expressed confidence that both involved parties could suggest new names for the benefit of the nation. He emphasized that members of the BOT board hold powers as specified and that important matters are discussed in all subcommittees. He remained uncertain about forthcoming nominations but stressed the importance of dialogue, recognizing the chairman of the selection committee’s authority in this process. He added that decisions should focus on progress and public satisfaction.

Mr. Pichai reassured that despite any delays, the functioning of the Mini
stry of Finance would remain unaffected as an acting person is currently overseeing operations. He dismissed online speculations suggesting Mr. Kittiratt might misuse treasury funds if appointed, pointing out that such actions are impossible since the funds are not held by the Bank of Thailand.

When questioned if the situation could be seen as a political attack due to Mr. Kittiratt’s affiliation with the Pheu Thai Party, Mr. Pichai refrained from making assumptions, stating the need for further investigation and discussion. He expressed confidence that the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance is contemplating the best course of action.
