Water experts say the Ping River is receding, with no more rain expected. It is expected to take at least a week to drain all low-lying water from Chiang Mai.
Mr. Chavalit Chantararat, Director and Water Expert of Team Consulting Engineering and Management Public Company Limited (TEAM GROUP), stated that today (October 6, 2024) at approximately noon, officers at the P1 water level measurement station, Nawarat Bridge, Chiang Mai Province, raised the green flag. The situation of the Ping River has begun to return to normal. In summary, the water level of the Ping River at Nawarat Bridge was at its highest at 5.30 meters on October 5, 2024 at 1:00 p.m., breaking the record set on September 26, 2024 at 1:45 a.m., which was at 4.93 meters, and breaking the record set in 2011 at 4.94 meters.
The water level at Nawarat Bridge has already passed its peak and is slowly decreasing. It is expected that it will take at least 2 more days for the water level to return to the banks, and it will take at least 1 week for a
ll the water in low-lying areas to be drained from the area, which must be pumped out.
Since October 5, there has been little rain in the upper Ping River Basin. The water level at the Mae Taeng water measurement station in Chiang Mai Province, which is the point where water from Mae Taeng, Chiang Dao, and Phrao meets before flowing into Chiang Mai City, has passed its peak in the early morning of October 5 and has been gradually decreasing.
However, on the morning of October 6, Mae Taeng still had a water level 1.80 meters above the bank, which will not cause the Ping River level at Nawarat Bridge to rise any higher.
