Pongkawin Confident US Tariffs Will Not Affect Thai Labor Market

Bangkok: Labor Minister Pongkawin expressed confidence that US tariffs will not impact the Thai labor market, amid scrutiny over the rapid closure of factories. He revealed that the Cabinet has approved cooperation with Sri Lanka to import workers to replace Cambodians who are returning to their country.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pongkawin Juangroongruangkit, Minister of Labor, addressed the issue of recruiting replacement workers for Cambodian workers returning to Thailand. The Cabinet approved a memorandum of understanding to recruit Sri Lankan workers. The country is currently ready to immediately send 10,000 workers, with over 30,000 having already registered. This group will be added to the list, with reports on other groups, including the Philippines, Indonesia, and Nepal.

Regarding predictions that the impact of US tariffs will result in factory closures and increased unemployment, this is unlikely to be a problem. There are a fair number of jobs in Thailand. However, if individuals are not selective about their job choices, opportunities exist for everyone. Pongkawin expressed confidence that US tariffs will not impact the Thai labor market.
