Pregnant women class is vital service for women, babies: Ministry

The Ministry of Health stated that the pregnant women class program is an important service for women and infants that should be implemented on an ongoing basis.

“Pregnant women class is one of the essential services, one of the efforts for (improving) community health that must continue to be made, not only by health workers in community health centers but also in other health care facilities, both owned by the government and private (parties),” the ministry’s Acting Director for Mothers and Children’s Nutrition and Health, Ni Made Diah, remarked while opening the Pregnant Women Class Program Reorientation event followed online here on Wednesday.

According to Diah, through the pregnant women class program, the community can get information and education regarding pregnancy, starting from maintaining health, nutritional fulfillment, and things that mothers need to know after the baby is born.

In addition, she noted that the class is expected to improve pregnant women’s access to health facilities as well as enhance service quality in health facilities.

On the same occasion, UNICEF Indonesia Nutrition Specialist Airin Roshita stated that this year, her side and the Ministry of Health have committed to strengthening the pregnant women class program to expand the coverage.

“Since 2021, UNICEF has conducted a study to find out how the pregnant women class is carried out. We received a lot of inputs, especially regarding the need for materials or supporting resources to make it more interesting and interactive, so that pregnant women are happy and interested to come,” she remarked.

As a follow-up to the input, Roshita affirmed that the Ministry of Health and UNICEF are making efforts to create various materials and supporting resources in the form of audio, videos, and comic strips, which are expected to make the class more interactive.
