President Joko Widodo and First Lady Iriana Widodo flew to Malang district, East Java, on the Indonesia-1 Presidential Aircraft from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, here on Wednesday.
Upon arrival at the Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Base in Malang district, the President is scheduled to head to Dr. Saiful Anwar Regional General Hospital in Malang city.
He will pay a visit to those injured in the Kanjuruhan Stadium stampede as well as provide compensation to the families of victims who died in the unfortunate incident.
The President will then head to Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang district for an inspection.
The Kanjuruhan tragedy unfolded amid chaos that ensued after spectators tried to storm the pitch over Arema FC’s 2-3 loss to Persebaya Surabaya in an Indonesian League 1 match on Saturday evening (October 1, 2022), prompting security personnel to fire tear gas that led to a stampede.
The incident has been confirmed to have claimed 131 lives.
In response to the incident, President Widodo ordered the creation of an independent joint fact-finding team, led by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, with Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali as deputy chairperson.
The team, consisting of 13 members from many spheres, has been tasked by the President to find out further information about the tragedy in less than a month.
After visiting Kanjuruhan Stadium, the President will make his way back to Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Base and then fly to Bali province.
The President is scheduled to arrive at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Badung district, in the evening and head to the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) to open the 5th Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice (WCCJ) 2022.
After the event, President Widodo will spend the night in a Bali hotel and continue his work visit the next day.
Widodo and Iriana are being accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD; Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy; National Police chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo; head of the Presidential Secretariat, Heru Budi Hartono; Presidential Military Secretary, Admiral Hersan; Commander of the President’s Security Force, Air Vice Marshal Wahyu Hidayat Sujatmiko; and deputy for protocol, press, and media at the Presidential Secretariat, Bey Machmudin.
