Prime Minister Launches ‘Thailand Winter Festivals’ with Doi Tung Scarf.


Bangkok: Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra officially launched the ‘Thailand Winter Festivals’ by wearing a traditional Doi Tung scarf, signaling the start of a nationwide celebration running from November 2024 to January 2025. She urged the Thai populace to collaborate in drawing international visitors to the country, emphasizing that regions such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Phayao are prepared to welcome tourists. The initiative aims to transform Thailand into a World Class Event Hub by elevating local festivals to global prominence.

According to Thai News Agency, the Prime Minister presided over a press conference outlining the seven key activities of the festival: the Loy Krathong Festival, Countdown Festival, Sports Activities, Cultural Activities, Food Festival, Music Festival, and Light Festival. The event was attended by key government figures, including Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Minister of Tourism and Sports Surawong Thienthong, and other high-ranking officials.

al’s launch was marked by a ceremonial wearing of winter-themed scarves made from naturally-toned Doi Tung fabrics, a unique product of Chiang Rai Province. Prime Minister Shinawatra noted the welcoming atmosphere of the winter season in Thailand, promising a plethora of activities across the country. She highlighted the importance of making Thailand a year-round destination, leveraging the country’s rich culture, delicious cuisine, and unique charm.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to various government and private entities for their role in organizing the festival. She highlighted the economic benefits such events bring to the country, emphasizing that this is the second year of the ‘Thailand Winter Festivals’. The festival aims to attract visitors not only to major cities but also to lesser-known destinations throughout Thailand.

The festival launch included a light and sound show, after which the Prime Minister attended a cabinet meeting. Prior to the meeting, Minister Varawut Silpa-archa led a campaign against violence by pinning white ribbons to promote the cause.

Minister of Tourism and Sports Surawong Thienthong stated that the festival, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and other agencies, is designed to boost tourism and position Thailand as a leading global event destination. The ‘7 Wonders of Thailand’ concept invites tourists to engage in diverse activities, including world-class music and sports events, aimed at extending tourist stays and enhancing their experience.
