Bangkok: The Prime Minister of Thailand, Paethongtarn Shinawatra, has initiated direct communication with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to address the recent border clashes at the Chong Bok checkpoint in Ubon Ratchathani Province. The Thai leader acknowledged the border tensions and expressed her commitment to resolving the situation swiftly through diplomatic means.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Shinawatra assured that discussions were underway with the Royal Thai Army’s Commander-in-Chief, and she had already engaged with the Ministry of Defense. The conversations with Prime Minister Hun Manet were characterized by mutual understanding, with both leaders agreeing on the importance of resolving the clashes and preventing future incidents.
When questioned about utilizing personal relationships to ease tensions, Prime Minister Shinawatra affirmed the positive nature of her relationship with the Cambodian Prime Minister, emphasizing its potential benefit in resolving the border issue.
The Prime Minister was also asked about former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s recent declaration of war on the Wa Reds to combat the drug problem. Her response was succinct, affirming her understanding of the situation with a simple “Yes.”
Regarding the recent violent incidents in Thailand’s southern border provinces, which involved multiple occurrences on 28 May, Prime Minister Shinawatra refrained from commenting and promptly concluded the interview.
