‘Regeneration’ of women’s badminton team going well: PBSI

The “regeneration” of the national women’s badminton team or the induction of new players is going well, as evidenced by their winning the 2022 Badminton Asia Team Championship (BATC), the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) has said.

The Indonesian women’s team took the 2022 BATC title after defeating the South Korean team 3–1 in the final round at the Setia City Convention Centre, Selangor, Malaysia on February 20, 2022. Most of the Indonesian team’s players debuted at the biennial Asian tournament.

Meanwhile, the men’s team bagged the silver medal after they were defeated by Malaysia 0–3.

“Our trust in the young players has resulted in a great achievement. It indicates that the regeneration of players has gone well,” PBSI General Chairman Agung Firman Sampurna remarked in an official statement issued here on Monday.

He also lauded the achievement of the women’s team, saying that with the title, the women’s team has created history.

This is the first time that the women’s team has reached the final round of BATC and won the championship by defeating several superior teams, he added.

He then lauded the men’s team for their tireless struggle and reaching the final. Although they lost in the final to Malaysia, which brought its main squad, the young Indonesian team was able to make an impressive achievement, he said.

“I thank all the players, both male and female, as well as coaches and support teams. You make us very proud with the achievements. Hopefully, the achievements can console the public in the midst of this hard situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” he remarked.

Earlier, the captain of the Indonesian women’s team, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, had expressed her gratitude for being able to contribute to the team’s victory.

The 2022 BATC was held in Selangor from February 15–20, 2022.
